Cologne Cathedral

I love this picture of the Cologne Cathedral from the “old days.” A tall, massive structure rises up among low buildings, drawing the eye from all directions.

Today it’s hemmed in, with a railroad yard right beside it. But it still stands. During World War II, Cologne felt the full fury of war. Everything around the cathedral suffered significant damage. The cathedral, too, was damaged, but not mortally.

I saw it in 2005. During the night, the river cruise ship floated through Cologne. No stopping. No tour. Just some lights.

A night photo, taken from a moving ship, gives me a blurry image of the Cologne Dom.

The cathedral is a character in my novel, No Neutral Ground. I wish I could have visited it.
 Have you?
